7/10/08 I'm on vacation through July 17, so click here for the latest schedule info. 8/1/07 We're fielding 2 teams for the fall, so we need to pick up quite a few quality players. If you know of someone looking for a team, bring him (or her) out to a Sunday practice at TJ. 6/5/07 I've updated the web site for the summer season. To view schedules, click on the team link (Blaze or Inferno) on the sidebar, then click on the Summer '07 schedule link from the team page. The CVSA site is currently down while it's being moved to a new server, so you're better off checking this site for the time being. I'll post the rosters once they're finalized in the next day or so. 5/31/07 The summer schedule is now posted on the CVSA web site. I'll update the Blaze FC site in a few days. Also, we'll probably make final roster decisions by Tuesday or so, so keep an eye on your e-mail if you're waiting to hear. 5/22/07 We have a few roster spots left for summer, but not many. They'll probably be filled as a result of the 5/31 scrimmage/tryout, so do your best to be there if you want in and haven't secured a spot yet. 4/12/07 Summer registration is coming up soon. We're planning to field 2 teams (probably Second and Third Divisions), so we need to recruit and raise money early. Keep an eye on your e-mail for details, and let me know if you know someone who wants to play. 8/31/06 Sorry I've been out of touch for a while; a newborn will keep you busy to say the least! I've finally updated this page, and I'll post the Fall '06 schedule and roster pages sometime in the next couple of days. In the meantime, just check www.cvsasoccer.org for schedule details. While you're there, you may notice we're in the Second Division this season. Not exactly my first choice, but far more teams requested lower divisions than upper divisions, so a lot of teams had to be shifted upward. I think we're solid enough to turn in a respectable performance in the Second. Anyway, we have a scrimmage this weekend, 11 AM at Thompson against Spoccer. Thanks to Daryl for organizing it in my absence. If you haven't let Daryl or me know whether you can make it, please do so immediately. If you will be at the scrimmage, please bring the $80 registration fee. If you can't make it, please contact me to make arrangements since the season starts one week later. 6/27/06 Is the World Cup ruined? It seems the referees have as much effect on the result as the teams this year. When's the last time you saw 10-v-9 and 9-v-9 in the same Cup? Lucky for France, Les Bleus managed to score a late third goal against Spain to avoid tough questions about Henry's melodramatic playacting, which set up the go-ahead goal. And just ask the Socceroos who sent them home: the Azzurri or Medina Cantalejo. Then again, he did at least show his lack of bias prior to the penalty with a ridiculous send-off of Materazzi. 2/26/06 The spring season starts up this Sunday, 3/5. We just rounded out the roster today and look to be in pretty good shape with 19 players. If you haven't paid for registration yet, be sure to bring payment on Sunday. 10/24/05 Don't forget that Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday at 2 AM. If you get to the game and don't see any of your teammates, just wait an hour or so. We're filling out the indoor roster now, so bring your $60 payment to the next game. At a minimum, let me know wheter you want in. 10/16/05 Finally chalked up our first win today and did so in convincing fashion. Keep in mind what we did right, and carry it over into the 10/23 match. Our next opponent is easily the toughest remaining, and those of you who have been on the team for a few seasons will remember several names, specifically Alex, Christian, Diskin, and Brian. Play hard and make these guys question their choices. 8/24/05 The first two fall games have been scheduled. The roster is pretty much full, but we could use a couple of key players, particularly a defender. Don't forget about poker this Saturday and practice Sunday morning. Hey, at least you won't be the only one hung over. 7/6/05 Blaze's summer team got off to a slow start, but things are starting to come together. Having a few subs for the rest of the season shouldn't hurt either. Stay tuned as we push for a high playoff seed. Believe it or not, registration for the fall season isn't far away. Keep an eye on this site and on your e-mail for details. Be ready to pay the registration fee by the end of July. 5/9/05 Summer season registration is a week away. So far, we have 9 returning players and 2 more who want in. If you want in, let me know immediately. 3/31/05 No, you weren't hallucinating; I somehow screwed up and posted West End United as our opponent this weekend instead of Action FC. Sorry. It's all better now. In other news, Blaze has stumbled out of the gate, to say the least. I won't post the stats, but look them up yourself if you really want to know. Fortunately, it appears to be a temporary problem stemming from the extensive personnel changes of late. A litle time to build some chemistry and some teamwork is all it takes. 2/27/05 The CVSA Cup starts back up this Sunday. Unfortunately, we'll be without Jimmy Hudson, who is moving to NC, and Alex & Christian Jenski, who aren't eligible for Cup play with Blaze since they aren't on the spring roster. Good luck to all three; we'll miss having them on the squad. FYI, I moved the older news to an archive page so the home page will load a bit faster. 2/15/05 The season is gearing up. The schedule, roster, CVSA Cup, and photos pages are updated; use the links on the left for the details. Thanks to Jon Deutsch for the new photos. Sorry the new buttons look like crap. I'll clean those up a bit before long. 1/31/05 Unfortunately, Battery didn't pull it together in time for the spring season. Hopefully, they'll re-form in the summer. In other bad news, Alex and Christian Jenski have left Blaze to play full-time for the MCV squad. After being with the team from Season One, they'll be missed. But Board permitting, they'll hang around for Cup play. Expect to see several new faces on Blaze, including a few Battery veterans. 1/11/05 Indoor didn't quite happen. By the time we were ready to register, RISE was full. No matter; spring is just around the corner! Contact me ASAP to register for the spring season. 12/16/04 The indoor season starts the week of Jan. 3. We're only fielding one team this season, and there are only 1 or 2 roster spots left, so contact me ASAP if you want in. 11/14/04 Nice Cup win this weekend for Blaze. Battery fell to a tough opponent in Bandito's. The drawing for the next rounds is tomorrow night, so I will have more specific game info posted in the next 2 or 3 days. In other news, check out the photos page for all-new action shots thanks to striker Jon Deutsch. 10/27/04 With the help of Battery, Kingston, and Revolving FC, I managed to get the 10/31 Kingston match postponed until 11/21. Check the schedule for details. We scrimmage Battery this weekend (see above) with as many players as possible; just like any game, let me know (if you haven't already) if you're unavailable this weekend. 10/24/04 We're short a bunch of players for the 10/31 game, so I'm working on rescheduling it. Stay tuned. If we do reschedule, we'll scrimmage Battery (maybe small-sided) on 10/31. 8/18/04 The fall season is just around the corner. We still have one or two roster spots available, so contact us ASAP if you want in. We'll practice the next 2 Sundays at Brookland Middle School. Come on out if you can make it. 8/5/04 Playoff seeds are set. Check the schedule pages for details. Blaze placed third overall in the Second Division and threfore has a bye in the first round. They will most likely face D'Funked in the quarterfinals on Wed., 8/11. Battery captured the final first-round bye with a fifth-place finish in the First Division and will play Thurs., 8/12, against Murphy's Law. 7/23/04 Playoff schedules are posted. Check them out, and be sure to let your captain know if you have to miss a game. 7/6/04 Check the schedule for changes. All games scheduled for John Marshall have been moved to Carter Jones, and Blaze's 7/21 match against FC Diablos has been rescheduled for 8/2. The postponement is due to a Richmond Kickers match against DC United. 6/15/04 The season starts next week. Correction to the previous update: Blaze will play on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Second Division, and Battery will play Tuesdays and Thursdays in the First. Both rosters are full. Good luck to both teams! 5/18/04 The summer season starts on 6/21. Blaze will play on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Third Division, while Battery will play Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Second. Blaze still has a roster spot or two available, and Battery may as well, so contact me if you're interested. 4/21/04 Blaze has drawn Kingston FC as our opponent in the Copa Bruce quarterfinals. The game will probably be scheduled for May 5th, 6th, or 9th. Be there; we owe these guys. 4/20/04 The $150 payment for the Lowcountry Soccer Festival in Charleston, SC, is due this Sunday, April 25. Be sure to get your payment in on time and encourage your teammates to do the same if you want to make this happen. If we don't have at least 16 paid players by Sunday, we'll have to cancel the trip. 3/23/04 Huge stuff tonight, boys. Particular thanks to Heff for the injury-time equalizer (soccer's answer to a Sweet 16 buzzer-beater), Rose for the well-placed corner, Dan (I can't remember the good saves because of all the great saves that overshadowed them), and Sean (their lead attacker looked fast until we put The Gnat on him). The whole team played a great game. We're now three games away from the title. Just keep playing like we did tonight. After a 170-minute Blaze nailbiter, Battery took Galaxy into Golden Goals only to be edged out 3-2 late in the first extra period. Good stuff all around from those guys, too. 3/4/04 Time to start planning for the Lowcountry Soccer Festival in Charleston, SC, Memorial Day weekend. Check your e-mail for details or e-mail me if you want more info. 2/8/04 Both teams resume outdoor play on Feb. 22 with the second round of Copa Bruce. Battery will face Italia at 10:00 AM at Montrose, followed by Blaze vs. Daredevils at noon. The remaining indoor schedule for both teams has been posted, but keep a close eye on it because it keeps changing. 1/15/04 Spring registration is here. The per-player fee of $70 is due no later than 1/27. Check your e-mail or contact me for my mailing address. If you'd prefer, you can pay the $65 league fee online via PayPal and bring the additional $5 to the next practice, game, or whatever. In indoor news, the season opener has been postponed from 1/20 to 1/27 since the facility is still under construction. Odds (for entertainment purposes only) of Route 288 being finished before the RISE facility have improved slightly to 275:1. 1/5/04 The Blaze FC indoor season is about to start up at the new RISE facility in Chesterfield. Blaze will play on Tuesday nights (not sure which night Battery will play), but stay tuned because the place is still under construction. Check out the new RISE page for more info. We'll hold a practice this Sunday, 1/11, at 2 PM at Mary Munford. Attendance is strongly suggested. | |||||||||
